Mine allergies have blossomed

Mine allergies have blossomed.

Pardon the pun, but today I was diagnosed as a textbook case of Oral Allergy Syndrome. This is the reason I have never liked salad, why I've hated dieting or eating carrot sticks, why fruit salads have become my sworn enemy. Turns out I am (quite) allergic to all pollen including the pollen found in raw/uncooked fruits and vegetables. My five-year-old self would be so excited; my twenty-five year-old self not so much. While I am Incredibly relieved to finally have an answer as to why I feel like crap 9 days out of 10, however, I'm pretty nervous about developing more severe allergies than I do now which sounds like a likely outcome.

Courtesy of Wikipedia, here are the following foods which I will run into the most problems with:

The funniest of these? I think chicory and dandelions. Pretty sure I've never eaten either. Funnily enough onions nor garlic are listed here however my allergist did say that they are of the mugwort family so carrots, celery, and peppers are possibly close behind.

I should reiterate for those of you that don't keep close tabs on my health, that I don't have an anaphylactic response to these foods; they just irritate my throat making it difficult to breathe, tighten my chest kind of feeling indigestion-like, and sometimes tummy problems depending on the food.

I am quite grateful that my symptoms can be managed by a simple antihistamine on a daily basis or two hours prior to eating some of the devilish foods. This should make my trip to Italy SO much more pleasant. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't taste the wine (yes, wine's on the list too), the tomatoes, the pastries with fresh fruit, etc. ! Italy would certainly not be the same!

Compooper troubles

My computer has been giving me a lot of grief lately. I think I have had to refresh this page over two dozen times just to be able to read it. Ugh. This is going to be a short post.

Today I had some good times at work helping our manager create new photos of the merchandise for the store's website. It was kind of fun to play with lighting and backgrounds and things. Slightly more tedious than getting pics ready for the blog (ha! as if I do much work with those!) but still better than doing nothing.

After work I did some knitting, finished marking all of my student's remaining papers, and got ready for teaching. This was my last bassoon class of the year and seemed pretty long because of that. They did their playing tests and written tests and all I can really say without having really marked the written tests yet is that I really think this last group of students was the best I've had. They learned so quickly and all played pretty well. It's kind of rewarding. Too bad none of them will ever play bassoon again... Ah well.

While they were writing their exams, I did my HR Planning assignment due on Friday leaving just the two essays and presentation on my plate for this week. I'm hoping to finish the essay that's due at 12:30 pm tomorrow early in the morning before I head to the allergist. After that it looks like I'll be writing my final essay of my undergraduate career in under 24 hours. Must go out with a bang!

Alrighty I've officially seen red warning and error signs about 5 times flash over my screen... so time to go! Night night!

Na na na na!

That's right folks -- in 45 MORE DAYS we will be heading to the land of pasta, the land of opera, the land of gelato, the land of cappucino, the land of the Vatican, the land of great works of art, the land of architecture: ITALY! We booked our flights (and travel/health insurance Mommies!) today and are Very excited that this trip is becoming a reality. Unfortunately the Contiki Tour group we were hoping to go with no longer has room, but we're still confident we can organize a great trip ourselves before we depart May 13.

In less excited news, Lenny was kind enough to share his cold with me and I've gotten very little work done today... I ended up canceling the information session about working for Pepsi in favour of finishing my paper for Thursday but so far no writing. Perhaps after this post goes up and I get some dinner or even after my night class tonight I'll be a little bit more productive.

Birthday night

Tonight we went out to Trichilo's for dinner. Lenny had the zuppa del giorno (soup of the day) which was a garlic, leek, bruyere soup as an appetizer. Quite delicious. I had some delicious homemade bread made with flour from a local mill with some o-kay olive oil. For the main course Lenny had carbonara (a linguini pasta with bacon) and I had pollo (chicken) with a lentil stew. Both of our courses were delicious and very well priced. We'll definitely go back there again.

After dinner we went out for a bit of a walk through Masonville mall so Lenny had a chance to stretch out his legs. After getting away with only a coffee purchase, we returned home to continue the celebrations with some New York Style Cherry Cheesecake that I made this afternoon while he was having a nap. I was able to get away with it because the poor guy can't smell a darn thing right now. Anyhoo this was the recipe I used. I highly recommend it -- very tasty. He will be getting a "real" birthday cake this weekend when we return to Toronto to celebrate it with his family. This cheesecake was definitely the next best thing. Nom nom nom.

In other good news, I've been super productive the past few days. I finished writing my bassoon exam for Wed. night, I'm nearly done my paper due on Thursday, and I'm nearly fully prepared for my presentation on Friday. With the extra time off of work tomorrow I should be able to get the rest of those things done leaving only my Industrial Relations Essay that is due on Friday. What a relief! The end is near and now I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Well I'm off to find some tv to watch with a semi-comatose Lenny! Ciao ciao for now!

Happy Birthday to Lenny!

Today we wish Lenny a happy 24th birthday. For a few months we will be the same age and I will not longer have to be the older more mature one. Ha!

In honour of Lenny's birthday I will now put up a cheesy poem using bears as props (Warning: Sappiness approaching!):

L is for lots of love. We've had so many great laughs and times together and I wish for a thousand more years of it.E is for even though I'm a musician. Putting up with the moodiness on a bad practise day and even the insane weirdness of my bassoon is worthy of a medal.
N is for playing nice. Sometimes (ok all the time) I don't know how you do it. You're always so even keeled and nice to everyone. What a wonderful inspiration you are to me and the world. No mauling cakes from you!

N # 2 - is for nerdy. I might not always understand what you're talking about but I value your smarts so much. We would get in to a lot more trouble and have way less fun without them.
Y is for yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh (just like the starting of CSI). You make me so happy and I'm a such a better person for knowing You! Thanks for sticking with me for the last 2 years :)
Happy birthday from the sweetest bear you know!

He survived!

Lenny did the 30k Around the Bay race in Hamilton today. It is North America's oldest road race (even older than the Boston Marathon!). There were about 7200 30km runners on top of a few hundred walkers and relay teams. Surprisingly it was quasi-easy to find him although I may invest in gifting him a brightly coloured shirt or a leprosy bell or something for the next race ;)

The first 26km went really well but then dehydration cramps set in pretty badly and he had to walk in the cold (-5 without the strong winds) for the last 4 km. All in all it took 3 hours 45 minutes which was about 45 minutes over his goal time. I'm still Really proud of him for not pushing himself beyond his body's limits. There was one guy who was so dehydrated that he completely collapsed and started vomiting and the whole bit right in front of me. The medics were there within 5 minutes but the poor guy was so embarrased and so ticked off that he couldn't make it the last 250m. SO glad Lenny didn't let his dehydration get to this point. Anyhoo, on with the pictures!
The race ended at the Copps' Colloseum and the inside was surprisingly full of people watching.
Here's my Lennykins about 500m from the finish. Still smiling. Always a good sign :)
Lenny was chased by a team of tutu wearers to the finish line.
Here's Lenny (in the blue top, near the centre) just leaving the shute.

This last picture was from a new yarn store in Hamilton that was supposedly having their grand opening this weekend. Not only did they have a handmade sign on the door saying they would not be open Sunday afterall, they didn't even really have a store sign, have one sketched-out website, and was in a quasi-sketchy area of town. Won't be visiting there anytime soon again...Well that's pretty much all we did today. This afternoon we've just been chilling in front of the tv enjoying the fact that we both have couches to lay down on today. I went to a group meeting for my Friday HR project and learned that I'm actually more prepared than everybody else so I'm feeling good about that. I should be able to finish marking the rest of my students' papers tongiht so overall I would say this has been an extremely productive day.

Other small item of good news: I was able to get rid of about 6 hours of work shifts for tonight so I'll have a lot more time to start/finish papers. Yay for relieving some stress!

Alright, off to workee!

Nighty night

Just a quick post because I've got quite a headache from a run this afternoon and I've got to get up at 6am to take Lenny to the bus that's taking him to the race.

This morning and early afternoon was really productive for us. We went and picked up the new-to-us sofa bed and after a lot of maneuvering, got it into the car and safely home. We rearranged the furniture in the living room to accommodate both until we decide which one to keep or our current one breaks. Then while I vacuumed, Lenny went to town on a mountain of dishes.

For lunch we went out to the Great Canadian Bagel, one of our favs. Then we walked over to the Michael's to check out these sales on yarn and needles everyone was talking about on Ravelry, only to find out that it was really just crochet needles. Anyhoo onto the Best Buy where I saw a really new interesting type of fan (it doesn't have any blades so it's kind of trippy to watch), some outdoor speakers in the shape of quite idealistic rocks, and the new iPad 2.

After we got home we went out for a quick 20-ish minute run around the block together. Unfortunately my body decided this was a terrible idea and I've been fighting a really bad headache ever since. Did manage to make some delicious Shepherd's pie for dinner. So yummy!

Well off to bed! Wish us luck for tomorrow... we think it's possible we're both coming down with the cold that's going around :(

Week at a glance...

This week coming up is going to be quite a doosy. It's not so much that there's a lot to do, it's just that there are so many different things to do that require a big change in mindset. Here's a breakdown of the things I have to look forward to in the next little bit.

Saturday
- Going to pick up a new free sofa bed courtesy of a moving professor. Our current couch is on its last legs (ha!). It's a hand-me-down from my old roommate Jessica and the frame has begun to separate from itself in several places. We're afraid it could collapse at an unopportune time so the offer of a free newish sofa bed is one we couldn't pass up
- Doing a lot of homework to try to make this crazy week easier/manageable

Sunday
- Trip to Hamilton to watch Lenny's first 30-km road race and a new yarn store where everything is 25% off (YESSSS!)
- Group meeting in the evening to prepare for a presentation on Friday

Monday
- Lenny's birthday. I'll be at work in the afternoon and then I've made reservations for us to try a new Italian restaurant in town - Trichilos

Tuesday
- Working in the afternoon
- Going to an employment info session for Pepsi
- My second last night class!

Wednesday
- Working in the afternoon
- Teaching the final bassoon class! Gotta prepare the exam and mark some papers ahead of time though...

Thursday
- Visit to the allergy doctor to figure out what's going on with my developing food allergies
- 30% research report due on how the training and development of music teachers has changed over the last 20 years... need to start this pronto
- Working in the afternoon
- Going to my accompanist's concert

Friday
- Group presentation on Human Resources Planning. Responsible for presenting for 8 minutes and baking 38 cupcakes. Arg.
- Essay for my Industrial Relations class is due. It's about Wal-mart employees trying to unionize in Canada and is not started yet even though it's worth 35%... My last essay however!
- Leaving for Toronto to celebrate Lenny's birthday with his family

It's pretty funny how empty my agenda looks after this. As I'm typing, I'm looking at some novels I've started reading that I'd like to get back to as well as a cardigan I'm knitting but having some issues with. I look forward to tackling these while planning a trip to Italy. These more exciting things are what's keeping me going right now. Any well wishes for this crazy week would be most wonderful. Into the final push now!

Recital Night Pictures

I didn't get a chance to get my picture taken with my pianist, however, I did get this pic of my dashing trio! There's Evan on cello, myself with my bassoon, Steven on viola, and Jordan on violin. This pic was taken after the recital in front of the fireplace. I'm holding the orchids Lenny's mom Silvana brought me. I think this may also be the first picture of my daddio on the blog:
My mom sent down a care package and a card for Lenny. Here is him opening some wine glass charms. What a cute smile :)
Finally I have a pic of what I scored at the Dollar Store's going-out-of-business sale. Everything was 25% off and I was still a little over excited and may have splurged. Only $17 though for all this loot!

Steph's 24th Birthday & Dakota's Dog Sweater

Better late than never. Here are some pictures from last weekend.

First up is cute-sauce Dakota showcasing her extreme excitement that we are home for a visit:
Suprisingly she was calm enough to allow me to put on her jacket that I knit her. Too cute!

Next up is the reason we came home really, Lenny's cousin Stephanie's 24th birthday. Steph's father is Lenny's mother's brother. She's currently at York but Lenny and I can't seem to agree with what she's studying, so we'll just leave it at that. Here's a picture of her post opening all the presents. Her boyfriend John is on the left:

Here's Steph's gift from us to her, handmade by moi. I'm getting better at this piping thing, but I still have a lot to learn. I'm also getting a little more creative with colour mixing. This was meant to be and actually turned out to be light purple, her fav.

Next up is a picture of Steph's actual birthday cake. I did not make this. ha! It was so pretty and so ornately decorated by her favourite bakery.
Let me introduce zeppole to all non-Italians here. Zeppole are served only around this time of year to celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph. They are amazingly delicious and look kinda like this (cut in half):
And the last picture from this weekend trip is of some sugary-ish nuts. I can't remember what Lenny's grandma told me they're called, and Lenny didn't know they had a name, so for now, I'll just post it up and we'll see if perhaps some of you know what they're called. They certainly were delicious though!

I don't wanna work

Cue that song... *I don't wanna work. I just wanna stay at home all day!*

In a combination of finishing the music degree last night (YES!), taking Lenny to work early (8:30! yawn!), and having some of my mom's delicious cookies aroun 10 am, I just do Not feel like starting on my essay for due at 7 tonight.

I think instead I'm going to get some groceries, do some knitting, watch some HGTV & TLC (currently on CakeBoss= Awesome!), and perhaps do a bit more cleaning (although there's really very little to do; I've been incredibly productive in that department lately). Too bad it wasn't a bit sunnier out; it'd be a nice day for a walk or run outside. I've been trying to restrict window shopping just for the sake of passing time because hey, gas is over $1.20 here and that is Expensive for someone gearing up to have a no jobs sometime soon. Le Sigh.

Finito Bandito!

I haven't posted for a while because we went to Toronto for the weekend and then I was trying to keep as much stress at bay at possible for my recital tonight. However, that being said, I have a Lot of pictures from the weekend and from tonight to post tomorrow. I'd do it tonight but Len is working away madly at a presentation he has to give tomorrow and he was the last person with the camera's connector cable...

First of all, the recital tonight went better than I could have hoped for: my stamina wasn't an issue, I wasn't even sweating like Miss Piggy by the end of it, I remained calm, my tempi were all respectable speeds (not too fast or too slow), there was a good crowd including my dad and Lenny's family, I looked and felt pretty, and there were a lot of smiling faces (probably 20-ish) in the crowd. I felt so confident about it and can't wait to hear a recording and post it up on YouTube for those of you that couldn't make it but are still interested. Wah. What a Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee relief!!

As for the weekend with Len's family in Toronto, there couldn't have been a better way to spend the last few days prior to my recital. I got to play with Dakota, their dog, a lot and that is always a tonne of fun. She's the most cuddliest dog I've ever met and even let me take the dog sweater on and off several times so I could put darts in it to fit her better. Lenny and I also did a little bit of shopping, went out for dinner with his family for some Delicious Italian-style pizza, and got to go to see The Adjustment Bureau movie with his entire family. As a side note, the movie was actually pretty good -- not as scary as the trailers made it out to be and more of a love story than a drama.

We spent Friday night celebrating his cousin Steph's 24th birthday. The Italian family birthdays are always a lot of fun with copious amounts of delicious foods and lots of happy boistrous conversation. I got to talking with Steph's grandpa for a while and probably only understood about 25% of what he was saying. He thought this was great and just kept on repeating things and laughing. Way too cute!

Tomorrow I'm going to work on (*ahem, start) a Recruitment and Selection paper due at 7 pm and then I don't have any big things due until March 31. Hazaa! Sunday we'll be in Hamilton for Lenny's 30k-Around-the-Bay run so more fun adventures are coming your way over the next few days!

Cute Sauce Video

So Lenny showed me this video the other day and I keep coming back to how funny it is! Hope you like it too:

Wednesdayyyy

Nothing too exciting to report for yesterday. The sun is finally out and I'm Definitely enjoying these warmer, double digit temperatures!

After dropping Lenny off for work yesterday morning, I got to have lunch with my old roommate from Year 5, Ea-Ling. She's currently in teachers college in Toronto and absolutely loving it. It's really exciting to hear about the funny student stories and also hearing from someone who is head over heals in love with what they're doing for work. She did tell me about a friend whose dad committed suicide on her birthday which really set me back. How terrible! Certainly makes you reevaluate how difficult any of the other things you're facing are.

Last night before teaching, I went to an HR speaker event at the school put on by someone that does HR consulting in the area. It was encouraging to hear that she'd spent a lot of time working for various employment agencies before landing her first HR job as I've kind of been considering this path but was unsure of if it would be beneficial for HR work. I'll add it to the list of things to look at when I finish school and/or get back from Italy.

Class went well with the last of the student presentations including one that was a rearrangement of a deadmau5 (a DJ) song that was actually Amazing. Sometimes the talents and love for music that my students express knocks my socks off. Only two more classes to go! Reviews next week and then the final exam after that. I can almost smell summer!!!

After teaching I had a really good run through 3 of my 4 recital pieces. I was really happy with my stamina, my biggest worry at this point, and glad that I made it through with chops still to spare. Today I have my formal dress rehearsal, so wish me luck!

Epic fail

I just ripped out about 3 more hours of knitting work. I had knitted too many rows in a row and could take a row out and reknit it without giving my hands cramps because the stitches were so tight. In the process of ripping everything out again, I've wripped the yarn in three different spots. And knitting is supposed to be a stress reliever for me. Ha! :-/

Time to call it a night. 3rd time's the charm tomorrow?

Beware the bears of March

Yesterday was a rough day for me. My bear, aka frustration, runneth over. I was so frustrated with preparing for my upcoming recital, writing papers on stupid topics, having a messy house, and just general not feeling well. I'm quite sure I've got some other food allergy/sensitivity that I haven't quite figured out yet and that's making me not want to eat at all. This is not helping with angst. Ugh. I have managed to find some source of a multivitamin that doesn't irrate my stomache/throat: a chewable one! One of the doctors I've been seeing suggested this, and I have to say I'm not sure why I never tried this before. No more icky fillers for me to react to. Go big pharma!

In other bear news, this is what happens to your knitting project when you're angry:

You rip out hours worth of work! I was getting really frustrated adjusting for starting with an extra 10 stitches on my sweater so I just ripped the whole darn thing out and have started over again. It's for the best but man it was bittersweet ripping apart the sweater with reckless abandon.

So one of the positives from the past few days was a successful trip to the mall today. I managed to snag some really good deals on things I was looking for including these thank you cards for my accompanying forces for the Monday recital for only $1:
It's small, but victorious nonetheless. I also cleaned out the front hall closet this afternoon ridding it of old shoes that I don't wear anymore and installed a hook for our umbrellas. I also did a small amount of reorganizing upstairs and emailed people who I thought might want some of my leftover things that I don't use anymore. The last of the things is a two slice toaster that works. If you'd like it, let me know! I know a bunch of you are moving around in the next little bit.

Tonight I have a Selection & Recruitment class followed by some more work on my HR Planning paper (due Friday). It's coming along well after some extensive work today and I'm feeling optimistic that I will be able to put forth a valient effort for Friday.

Well I'm off to have some delicious leftovers of a pork broccolli carrot stir fry that Lenny made last night. SO thankful to have someone else taking care of some cooking during this busy busy season. Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming!

Weekend

This weekend has been pretty lazy. Yesterday I worked at the store for the university's March Break Open House day. I chatted with a lot of new potential students and their families and actually sold clothes as well!

Last night we went out for pizza at P.za.pie, our favourite pizza restaurant in London. It was the busiest we've ever seen it which was kind of nice in that I've always thought it should be busier than it usually is. The service was still pretty fast and we managed to score some delicious Lindt chocolate gelato for dessert.

Afterwards we headed off to Chapters to look at the latest books. I ended up picking up some of these really cute crossword puzzle books for less than $3 each. It'll give me something to do that's not knitting during downtime as well as something semi-productive.

Speaking of knitting, I thought it was about time that I post an update of my current knitting project: my first sweater.
This particular stitch is called the old shale stitch, but I keep wanting to call it the old whale stitch. ha! I guess it's because it sort of looks like waves. I'm really enjoying working with this silk blend and still have 10/11 balls of it left to go before I have something resembling a sweater. My goal is to finish it before we leave for Italy in May, but that may be a tad ambitious. Time will tell.

Party Time

Friday night, Lenny and I helped celebrate Kirsi's 22nd birthday. Kirsi is a German exchange student that's in a bunch of my HR classes even though she is in Aviation Management. She's a lot of fun and was actually introduced to the blog when we went to the London Food & Wine Show early this year.

Another cool thing about Kirsi is she actually lives in the exact same apartment as I did in my third and fourth year. It's been updated a little bit (new master bath & no more 1970s partitions between the kitchen and the dining area) but other than that was so eerily familiar. I did take a bunch of pictures, but in creepiness's sake, I'll just post this one of the living room area just before all the guests arrived. Kirsi is in the black and white dress and Jorg, her boyfriend, is on the far right:

One of her roommate's is actually working on a thesis project on pancreatic something which is very similar to what Lenny's studying. They had a good chat as they have a lot of people in common. It's always nice when Lenny gets the chance to talk about sciency things when I'm out with friends.

Kirsi had a friend that organized a trip on the Party Bus en route to the Tap House, a downtown bar. Here's a shot of the outside of the bus:
The inside had mirrors on the ceiling, a fog machine (is that even safe for driving?!), blacklights, leather seating, mirror balls, and other party things. The pictures didn't really work out, but here's an attempt:
I had to post this pic even though it's foggy from the smoke machine because it's probably the best self portrait of the two of us in a while. Gosh I love this guy!We had a lot of fun and had a good time meeting some new people from all over the world. I think it's possible that there were actually only 3 or 4 Canadians including Lenny and myself in the party of 30. There were people from Brazil, Australia, Germany, Austria, somewhere in the UK (England?), amongst others. Tonnes of fun!

So there you go -- a recap of Friday night and one of the trips to the London bars I have actually taken. I think I'm up to four now!

Stay tuned for a weekend update...

TGI(A)F!

Thank God it's almost Friday!

Thursdays are always my most nerve-wracking days: a lecture of my most demanding course and a lesson immediately after. Both of these things also usually involve rushing to and from as well as a lot of mental focus -- something I'm not so great at these days. To add to the madness of today, it was also freezing cold rain today. At least I remembered an umbrella! The class went ok although for the second week in a row, the material she asked us to prepare wasn't discussed. Bummer. My lesson went really well and I think I probably had a personal best for the performance of the Kozeluch concerto.

When I came home, Lenny was already busy cooking dinner and had washed all of the day's dishes. Here's a pic of his Spicy Asian Chicken Stirfry:That's right mom: I ate vegetables and everything! It was scrumptilidelicous!

Tomorrow night we're hoping to go out with Kirsi to celebrate her 22 birthday. Well I'm sure we'll feel a bit "old" (ha!), it should be a lot of fun. In a fun twist, she actually lives in my exact old apartment that I lived in for 3rd and 4th year (the Richmond St one). I'm really curious to see what it looks like after a supposed renovation and with all different furniture and stuff. Should be fun!

Happy Birthday to Paula!

This post was supposed to go up on March 8, Paula's birthday, but I didn't set it up right... Better late than never!Today is my big sister Paula's birthday. In the hopes of avoiding Christmas pictures, I decided to go with this one from a February 2010 visit to her place in KW. Paula is on the far left, followed by my youngest sister Erin, myself, and Lenny.

Paula is an engineer and has always been pretty strong-willed. This was an excellent quality to have in an older sister as she's always been a good leader. If it hadn't been for her moving so far away for university, I probably wouldn't have considered it either. She proved that it could be done! P has also counselled through some breakups, lonely times, and difficult decisions. She has recently bought her first home and again this brings me hope that it can't be that far off for me either.

Hope you have a wonerful birthday and best wishes for a new year of adventures!

Break time

March is going to be the most stressful month for me in a very long time so you'll have to be patient with me while I take some mini breaks from blogging. The last two days I've been fighting a really bad headache. It kept me up for hours last night but a combination of a ibuprofen, a hot shower, and a cold face cloth on my forehead finally did the trick.

The headache was exasperated by a snafoo with last night's bassoon class. I had made arrangements for someone else to teach the class and another person to come to video tape the class so that I could attend an HRPLD event. Although I felt like everything was organized to do this, the video camera, and all of the recording equipment in the room where they keep that stuff for that manner, was missing. This worries me a lot because I was one of the last people to get the combo to this room and it was really stressful for the sub I had in. :( Thankfully one of my students was able to record most of it using his laptop, but sheesh, sometimes you just can't win. Hopefully everything works out.

The HRPLD event was quite interesting. It was really long, not at all what I was expecting content-wise, but I did manage to snag a student membership for 1/2 price essentially saving myself $100. Being a member will also allow for a lot of new opportunities to network at their monthly events and gain access to an online HR databank I wouldn't have complete access to otherwise. Interestingly enough I did meet one lady who works for the school board in labour relations who is actually the girlfriend/fiance/wife (not sure) of a PhD in music candidate that I know.

In other exciting news, Lenny's been a champ taking care of me stressing out about life these days. Tuesday night he washed all of the floors in the house so I could come home to the "lemony scent of fresh" in his own words. Last night he did two loads of dishes, meal planning, grocery shopping, and dropping me off & picking me up from the HRPLD event so I could have a little bit more downtime and less walking in the rain. What a champ. I am SO incredibly thankful to live with such a caring partner at this crazy time of life.

Lenny also got a tentative date for his PhD proposal (he's in the process of reclassifying from a masters to a PhD): May 10. I'm really excited that this is so early in May as it means we should be able to get a decent amount of time in Italy for a vacation. Right now we have to wait until that date can be confirmed, and then we can book flights and start to really plan the nitty gritty stuff!

For those of you that are wondering, my mom is doing really well with the stresses of chemo. She is starting to lose her hair but is in a fantastic (I think) optimistic state of mind about the whole thing. I'm so happy for her. The next chemo treatment (2/6) is on Monday so keep her in your thoughts then!

Well I'm off to get dressed and work on an assignment due later today. Everything seems to take so much longer when you have a headache :-/

March fails

I had the best intentions of today being a productive day. Honest. I worked for an hour on an Industrial Relations assignment, finished that, went onto working on an HR Planning paper for an hour and then decided to take a break. At this point it went down hill. I decided to watch some Cake Boss and work on my knitting. Long story short, I decided that counting the number of stitches in a row would be a good idea because I hadn't done it in a few rows and low and behold I somehow added 10 (?!?!!) stitches! I think it's possible that I've actually just been +10 stitches the whole time and just didn't notice because I normally just count in groups of 10. After triple checking the count using some stitch holders, I decided it was time to rip out all of my work and start again but not without taking a picture first. I haven't actually ripped it out yet because it just breaks my heart, but ah well... probably after this post.
It doesn't look like I'm that far, but the knitting is really fine. Hrmph.

Needing another pick-me-up, I decided that it'd be a good idea to bake some chocolate chip cookies so we have something to snack on this week. While not the healthiest of snacks, I do like that they're preservative free at the very least so away I went. I got about 1/2 way through and realized we only had one egg instead of the necessary two. Against my better judgement, I decided to take a trip to Costco. Now we usually go to Costco sometime during the week and not a weekend afternoon. Today I was reminded why. Although there are way more sample ladies on the weekends, there are also about 10x as many shoppers strutting along and it's really hard to get in and out quickly (P.S. I also looked for mozzarella cheese to do a pasta dish tonight but the cheapest amount they sold it in was $12!!). What would normally take me 10 minutes ended up taking 45. Ugh. Stolen parking spaces even though I was signaling, being rammed with carts by people not looking. Ugh. Not a great experience.

Anyhoo so I arrive home and start unloading the groceries only to find Lenny is having a nap having just come back from a 26-km run in slushy slushy slush. So after unloading all the groceries myself, I get to the recipe and stupidly only add 2/3 cup of flour instead of 2 2/3 cup of flour. FYI, this is what your cookies will look like if you try that yourself sometime:
Well I'm off for round three of attempting to get into a better headspace to continue on this paper and spend some time practicing. Let's hope everything comes up peachy this time!

Starsky

Today is my family dog Starsky's birthday. In honour of Starsky's 6 year birthday, I thought I'd post some pictures of her instead of delving into my fairly uneventful day (going to Cora's for breakfast, baking some carrot bread for a potluck dinner, vacuuming, doing three loads of laundry, and going to said potluck to celebrate the ending of the running clinic).

Here's a picture of Starksy with a Christmas bone. She's generally pretty bored so any sort of toys like this go over very well with her:
This is another classic pose of dear ol' Starsk. She's quite a big suck for pets and always seems to want you to keep going going and going.
A picture of Starsk today courtesy of my dad.
Unfortunately I couldn't find any cute puppy pictures; I think they're all on my old hard drive which is not really worth digging out at this point.

Anyhoo, that's it for now. I'm pretty sleepy these days so off to bed I go!

Doggie machine

Lenny and I both really like this video. Doggies and babbies and Mozart and geeky computer designs? How could you go wrong?

Fail

Tonight I kind of failed in getting ready/going to running. The cold sleeting rain just was sooooooooooo unappealing. Instead, I've been enjoying some down time by visiting funny websites like this collection of fails.

We also took a little jaunt out to the New Balance store. Lenny has developed a slight obsession with the Minimus shoe over the last few weeks. While it turned out to not be in stock yet, it is expected to arrive at the store any day now. I'm curious to see if he ends up liking these better than the Vibram 5 fingers or not. Could be an interesting show down!

Wedding Cakes

No I'm not about to announce anything, but check out these amazing cakes -- http://www.zuzafun.com/royal-cakes

I'm a big fan of Cake Boss but I don't think he's made cakes this big.

Jobs jobs jobs

Today I got another rejection email regarding a job I had applied for (3M), so I did what is becoming a normal practice and applied to a few more jobs! These latest ones are with Labatt (they brew here in London) and IMJ Group (a business/consulting firm here in London). The Labatt one would be interesting because I hate beer and the IMJ group prefers people that speak arabic, so we'll see how those go!

Today I had a rehearsal with my quartet for my recital on March 21. It is fast approaching with only one rehearsal week left before dress rehearsals. I'm not too nervous in that my pieces are in fairly good shape, but I do have some technical passages to work out still and I also must work fairly dilligently to increase my stamina. This should help with a bit more confidence on game day.

Tonight Lenny and I will be going to our second last Running Room clinic night. I'm not really looking forward to running in this cold sleet-y rain we're having.

Off to watch some Say Yes to the Dress!

Wed-Thurs news

I've been doing a whole lot of this lately. Maybe I'm coming down with something or maybe it's because I've been working out more and eating a little less, but I haven't really been feeling up to much lately. Wednesday was spent working at the store and teaching another bassoon class. Today I did a major tidy-up of the house, went to a training and development class, had a lesson on the Jacob partita (my solo bassoon piece), and met up with Tamara who was visiting for the day.

Today is also Lenny and my's two year anniversary. We talked online through eHarmony for about six weeks before meeting in person on March 2, 2009. He had the most phenomenal answers to all of my questions and has always seemed like the perfect guy for me since day one. There hasn't been a day since March 2, 2009 that I haven't had a big grin on my face from something he's said or done. How special that I have met my match so early in life. I am so grateful. Here's to hoping you all find that special someone that brings a smile to your face, especially when you need it most.

That's one step back, three steps forward

So my job interview today went fairly well however I was a Complete Idiot and didn't double check the time in my agenda and ended up showing up 15 minutes late because I thought it was at 2:30 instead of 2:00. Ugh. I think after the initial stage, I did make a fairly good impression and was invited to the next round: an online screening interview. I did that this afternoon after the interview and will find out the results of that in 5-10 business days.

To offset the stupidity I feel for botching that interview, I applied to three more jobs this evening: two marketing positions with 3M and a customer service job with voices.com (started by a fellow music grad). Hopefully one of those will click.

In other news, I went to yoga this morning. I'm not quite capable of doing all of the poses yet, but I have significantly improved my wrist and arm strength since say this time last year. What a relief to be able to open doorknobs again. Hopefully that problem never resurfaces.

Well that's about it for excitement for tonight. I think I'm going to start on some essays or knitting tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.
