Hmmm

There's nothing too much to report these days so my apologies if you're looking for something to procrastinate that paper or that chore with, you're going to have to keep on looking.

Weeeeeeeeee!

Praise items:

• My, hopefully, last-ever band concert went pretty well tonight. The socializing time afterwards was pretty fun too :)
• I officially have an internship offer working alongside some of my favourite people on planet Earth: the DWFOM! Yay :) As of August 1 (to May 1) I will be working as a full-time dean's assistant. I look SO forward to being a part of this team of excellent people.
• I met one of my potential housemates for next year today and we seemed to get along pretty well. It is very weird to "shop" for someone to live with.

Well I have a blessed little lecture at 9am tomorrow, so I'm off to bed!

YAY!

I finished this o.b. report before a fairly normal bedtime! WAHOO!!!! Only one more paper, two concerts, two exams, and then I will be freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee from the world of academia for a blessed 16 months. GLORIOUS!

Tomorrow is a rather long day for me, as Wednesdays always are, so I'm afraid I shall sign off now. Cheerio!

The Hospitality Industry & Comment Cards

This is the general area for my o.b. paper. Sounds realllllllllly exciting, eh? :S

I'm currently wading through academic journals and textbooks. Unfortunately I am SO in an I-hate-reading mode. Ah.

Woe is me!

This silly DMA thing is taking about a gadzillion hours longer than I anticipated. We're summarizing 9 schools. The first part (of which I did 7 schools parce que je ne comprends pas le francais bien), took about 5 hours -- not bad. This second part, took me almost 5 1/2 hours for THREE schools!?!?! Arrrrrg. Thankfully (or ironically, perhaps), the meeting for which I've been scrambling to get this done for, has now been moved to April.

In other exciting news, I still haven't started work on this O.B. report. At least I have from 8-4 tomorrow in the office to ProQuest away (an scholarly search engine).

In even more exciting news, I am signing off the computer! This is tres exciting after having been at it on and off since about 3. Yay!

WHO INVENTED ENGLISH?

I have a few choice words for a select Canadian university offering a DMA program for their interchanging use of "thesis recital" and "lecture recital"... they are NOT the same thing.

Yay! 2 hrs of work later, I'm officially done about 50% of the DMA Proposal, Part 1. :)

FYI, my favourite part had to be reading about the essay requirement for the Manhattan School of Music:

" It is our intention to get to know you as well as possible through your application and the essay. Your audition and musical credentials help us to learn about you as a musician. The purpose of our essay question is to learn about you as a person. Therefore, in your online application, please write an essay on one of the following topics: "My alarm went off as usual this morning. I got out of bed and walked over to my closet. When I opened the door, I was surprised to see that the interior of my closet had disappeared! I stepped through the door and...." or "In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge that your entire generation faces? What ideas do you have for dealing with this issue?"

Also, I don't think I have mentioned how incredibly THANKFUL I am that I am doing this at a point in history where our beloved friend, Mr. Internet, exists; I cannot imagine the time it would take to collect all of this information via phone calls and university secretariat files :S...

Ok, so I still did not get around to writing my organizational behaviour report nor work on the doctoral application stuff, but I did spend a few solid hours making reeds & practising, so all in all, I'm making progress on my list of things to do this weekend. I was also able to start a housing search for next year (my lease expires April 30th here). Amazingly enough, after a mere four or five e-mails, I think I might have a place with two music students! The place is also slightly cheaper than where I live now, but includes laundry facilities (WAHOO!), a dishwasher (WAHOO!), is directly on a bus route (the #2 - WAHOO!), and is closer to where a lot of my music friends live (WAHOO!). It's still a little early to say that is a done deal, but boy do I ever feel encouraged!

I am close to running out of bread and seeing as I had all of the ingredients to make some, I decided to bake bread from scratch! Surprisingly, it turned out!!! I was a little worried because I did everything by hand (our food processor isn't big enough & our mix master doesn't have "kneaders"), but alas here is the proof:

Today I functioned quite well on just over four... ugh... Going to bed around 1 and getting up around 5:30 did translate into a well-written marketing report and being adequately prepared for the epic Foot Patrol presentation today. I am very thankful this is all over with though.

What does Easter weekend hold for Heather? Writing my organizational report (due Wed), practicing (I got into Domain, btw!), making reeds (sooooooooo needed), sorting though egads of mail (both e-mail and snail mail... my apologies if you're one of the THIRTY-THREE people that have e-mailed me in the last 24hours...), finishing a portion of the doctoral application thinger so it looks like I've actually been working on it for the past few weeks **do do do, shifty eyes**, doing dishes (at least three days worth... maybe more... don't come to visit please), laundry (what is that?), other duties as assigned...

Sleeeeeeeeeeep. Must go to sleeeeep.

It is 1:30am

And I am still up. Thank you marketing group for assuming that our report was single-spaced when in fact it was double-spaced. To clarify for those not writing essays on a regular basis, this means that the VAST majority of my day has been spent weaning 5000 words down to 2500 words. AH!

At least it is done, with relative success. Yay for volunteering to be the editor. Yay. 3 times yay.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Procrastination!

Nothing too exciting to report. This morning I worked up the hill from 8-11 and then came home to nap for most of the afternoon. I'm not really that overtired, but my body seems to be giving out on me with aches and pains that are consistent with me being tired. Anyhoo, after my nap I headed out to the mall to buy a white blouse for my marketing presentation on Thursday. Our group decided that this would work best, but alas, I do not own a single white blouse with a collar! I'm not really sure how this happened... before I came to school I can remember having at least two... I can't recall ever wearing one in London though. Anyhow, I found one at Smart Set that was regularly $38 on for $19, which rung through the cash register as $14. I always feel like a successful shopper when things like that happen, even if the random price difference was out of my control. After shopping I headed back to school to practice & did a decent job of it considering I haven't had any solid practicing time for quite a few days now.

Tonight I've been procrastinating by looking up different travel deals for the free time I will have May-July. It's looking like I'll be doing a summer programs from May 26-June 14 (Windfest) and/or June 15-29 (Domain Forget). After a solid month of playing 5hrs a day, I'm sure I'll be ready for a break!

The Festival of the Sound [http://www.festivalofthesound.ca/] runs July 18-August 10 in Perry Sound, ON. I have wanted to go for the last few years but it never seemed to work out. Perhaps this year :) I suppose I'm also considering checking out either Montreal, Vancouver, or Toronto to check out some potential teachers there. Has anyone encountered any amazing experiences in Canada that I really ought to check out? Now would be the time to share ;)

Anyhoo, I should be off to bed... I'm planning on writing 12 pages worth of Marketing Goodness before 4:00 tomorrow. Should be fun times...

Time to Cry Out

This morning I got a call from Annie & Rick (a couple living in London) to see if I was interested in going to the house fellowship out in Norwich. Interestingly enough, I didn't have any concrete plans for the day so off I went! I *love* visiting this bunch of people but for the past few months, things haven't worked out so well for that to happen very often.

Rad Zadero (sp?) also "randomly" was able to make it down today from Mississauga. For those of you that have heard me talk about the Pagan Christianity church history book I've recently started reading, Rad is the guy that introduced me to it well over a year ago now & I haven't seen or heard from him since. Coincidence that the same week I start reading the book & our paths cross? I think not.



The group's conversation led me to ask some questions that I've developed from the first 46 pages and seek some answers. One particular example is why would God allow for His people to remain in the "bondage of traditional churches" (if it is such) for so long? I was pointed towards Exodus when the Israelites were slaves for 400 years. That number of 400 years never really sunk in for me... it is a really long time. Anyhoo, furthermore, God did not bring them out of slavery until they cried out for change. And when God finally did bring them out & there was change, so many of them missed the leeks, onions, & garlic of Egypt that they wanted to stop stepping out into uncharted territory and head back to their comfortable bondage (in case you haven't experienced it yet, you'll find house church groups not quite as "comfortable" as traditional churches... you're spiritual life is much more exposed). It was also shared that when you look back, as the Israelites & so many people who have left church buildings to "be the church" did/do, you start plowing crooked rows because you're no longer fixed forward, on Jesus. Wow.

I really think that the Church in this part of the world is on the cusp of a crossroads where so many are crying out and being individually shown what God wants His church to be. It is radical thinking, but at the same time it has been around for thousands of years. Uncharted territory is scary, and sure you could be heading in the "wrong" direction, but with the Lord guiding & leading, would you really want to be anywhere else?

Random Musings Take 2

Nothing terribly exciting to post so I'll just post away...

• Paul & I went to see Vantage Point tonight. I am learning to enjoy these more "intense" movies.
  
• My marketing project is well on the way to being finished. We present this Thursday but there's still a lot of work to be done including writing the 14-page report, which yours truly will be ripping off during the hours of 12 & 12 tomorrow.
• I think I probably have an internship lined up. More to come on that later (things are still being finalized) but I am very excited for a change of scenery!
• I stumbled upon http://doublebassblog.org/2006/11/advice-for-aspiring-music-performance-majors.html today. It is really quite a good article & I think reaffirms that going teacher shopping in the next few years may be more profitable career-wise than just continue on here.
• I made brownies from cocoa today. I LOVE COCOA BROWNIES.

French ferry strike causes orchestral chaos LSO borrows instruments from local musicians

The London Symphony Orchestra ended up in a race against time this Saturday after a strike by French ferry workers left the orchestra without any instruments. Arriving in Dijon to perform Mahler’s Seventh Symphony, members of the LSO were disconcerted to find that their instruments, music and clothes were still sitting in a lorry in a traffic jam in Kent. The tailbacks were caused by striking SeaFrance workers.

With the concert start approaching, and the lorry stuck in gridlocked traffic, the orchestra decided to try and borrow nearly 100 instruments from around Burgundy. Appeals were made to local musicians and schools, as well as to opera companies in Paris and Lyon. By 8pm an orchestra’s worth of instruments had been rounded up. ‘They came in dribs and drabs,’ says LSO double bassist Matthew Gibson in The Times. ‘Some didn’t get instruments until ten minutes before we went on.’

As well as having to gather together instruments ranging from flutes to cowbells, new scores had to be printed for the players, and traditional concert dress abandoned. The viola section ended up improvising during the performance when a page in the newly printed score was found to be missing. After rapturous applause at the end of the concert, the orchestra was relieved to hear that the lorry-load of instruments had arrived in time for its next performance in Paris.

Royal Opera House to put on ‘pop opera’ Damon Albarn’s first opera comes to London

An opera by pop star Damon Albarn, a former member of Blur, is to be performed at the Royal Opera House this summer. As part of Covent Garden’s summer season to celebrate Chinese culture, Albarn’s Monkey: Journey to the West will be brought to the world-renowned stage. The opera is Albarn’s first.

Premiered last year at the Manchester International Festival with great success, Monkey: Journey to the West replaces traditional opera singers with aerial acrobats, contortionists, martial artists, jugglers and a cartoon animal. Based on a 16th-century Chinese fable telling the story of the monkey king, the production has been designed by Jamie Hewlett, who also masterminded the cartoon designs for Albarn’s virtual rock band Gorillaz. After the work’s premiere, The Times described the work as ‘an improbable combination of The Lion King, Cirque du Soleil and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’.

Tony Hall, chief executive of the Royal Opera House, has denied claims that putting on the ‘pop opera’ is dumbing down. ‘It was a piece of real quality,’ says Hall in The Times. ‘I think it’s doing what the Opera House should do, which is to present international pieces from around the world.’ Albarn studied classical music in his childhood and is a fan of Messiaen and Cage. ‘It’s difficult to stay in both camps once you’ve entered the world of themes and development,’ says Albarn. ‘I’m not sure how I’m going to do it.’

Brazil Nuts

So I have been reading up on some healthy foods that I don't normally have, and came across some interesting info on Brazil nuts, courtesy of Wikipedia:

• They contain 1000x the radiation of most other foods. Ironically enough this is because of their extensive root system
• They have the highest saturated fat content for a nut
• They are more commonly found in Bolivia, not Brazil
• It's not unusual for the tree to live to 1000 years
• You can get Brazil nut oil for your clocks.
• They're actually not a nut -- they're a seed

Minute Musing

So last night I went to Becky's graduating oboe recital. She did a fantastic job and had a really big crowd! Afterwards we went over to another oboist's house for drinks and snacks and good chats. A lot of the things we talked about we incredible ironic given recent bumps in the road I've hit. I most definitely feel like God is right by my side again. Anyhoo, I couldn't get back home until 1 and I must leave for a rehearsal at 7:30, so tata for now :)

Finally

This evening I was finally able to make some headway into this lovely sea of depression I've been in for the past week. Amidst the tensions of recitals, mid-terms, presentations, jobs, co-op rejection letters, and a whole lot of things that just did not go according to plan, I have not been my normal self. With the help of Josh and an extended talk with Jordan this evening though, things are looking up -- not perfect, but definitely looking up. For whatever reason, every once-in-a-while, when the tough gets going, the first thing I stop doing is talking to people. Janessa, via Jordan, pointed out though that we really need to depend on people a lot more in the Christian family sense. I think it is very common for Christians, particularly within "my group," to just say nothing instead of saying something that is not 100% thought through yet. While thinking about things more than 0% is extremely important (definitely not something I do often enough), so much more is accomplished through the dialogue sessions that we all have when we aren't afraid to say we're scared, sad, frustrated, etc. I have been going on an honesty kick in these past few days where I am trying to cut out the white lies or errors of omission we all make for things to run a little smoother. I couldn't have known that this was the epiphany that I would be led to but I have to say I have learned a lot from it. This certainly has been quite an eye-opening past few days -- I'd encourage you to try this "truth" thing... It isn't easy, but my goodness do you every learn a lot about yourself and about others.

Anyhoo, props again to Jordan for offering advice to a teary-eyed burnt-out Heather and to all those who have been on the receiving end of some why-would-you-say-that truths, know that my prayers are with you.

I am still alive so stop worrying. It has been a rather crummy past few days and seeing as I don't want this blog to become a forum of complaints, I'm just refraining from posting. See you in a few more days, no doubt.

Yay! I'm all done with my recital! I feel as if a huge weight has been lifted -- it's *quite* fantastic really. :) I had a fairly large crowd of around 20ish of my close friends. It was great to have played fairly well, in a fairly nice hall, with an extraordinary reed, and an extraordinary group of people cheering me on. I'm kind of sad that I didn't play my 100% absolute best, but I did play really well -- nothing to get hung up over. Thanks again to everyone that made it out :) I will try to post up a sound clip or two sometime in the near future. For now though, I'm going to do some reading and go to bed -- I'm exhausted!

Yet Another Epic Car Trip For Heather

Well as can probably be expected, my tight schedule didn't work out 100%. First of all, I/David didn't budget enough time to get to the house fellowship so my estimated 10:30 arrival time became 11:30. I also left their place kind of late as well and made it to the rehearsal with 5 minutes to spare (soooooo not enough time to set up two instruments). Thankfully, the entire orchestra was running slow and we didn't start until 10 after. Sweeeeeeeeeeet deal :). After the concert Elena and I left in good time and made it about 6km away from Woodstock when I realized that I didn't have my garment bag with me. Now normally I just would have continued on and would just pick it up at the next rehearsal but I couldn't do that because my recital is tomorrow night (plug #100000) and I really wanted to wear some of it (it's a business suit). 1 1/4 hours later I arrive back at the Royal Botanical Gardens only to discover that it is not where I left it. I call Professor McKay (the conductor) to get the phone numbers of people who may have taken it. Four very expensive long distance cell phone calls later, I reach someone who not only knows where they are (a church where we rehearse) but also has a key. By this time he is 20min away from the church and I am only 5 so I drove to the church to wait. Luckily enough, another person with a key shows up and I am able to retrieve my garment bag, call the other guy (who is like 2 min away at this time) and race back to London. I arrived back in London at 8:55, just in time for my 9:00 rehearsal only to discover that Jordan is not there. Seeing as I usually/always remind him about our changing rehearsal times and I didn't, I felt pretty when I called to see where he was and he said he wasn't sure we had rehearsal. Back in the car I go; zip over to his place; both of us were ready to play by like 9:12. Craziness. My rehearsal at 10:30, became more like 10:45, so we didn't finish until about 12:15. Throw in the fact that I had to get gas & return the car, and you now all know why I am going to bed at 2 the day before my recital. Good times :S...

Anyhoo, I hope I see some of you tomorrow; it should be a good show!

P.S. I am getting a video recording of this so providing I am not to embarrassed by how I play, I should be able to share it with you all in a few weeks (when the DVD makes its way back to me). Nighty night!

Out with a bang

Well my reading week is certainly ending out on a bang. My current schedule for tomorrow looks a little like this:

8:00am - Wake up, get ready
9:30 - Depart for Music Building & load car with contrabassoon, regular bassoon & David. Yes that's right folks, David.
9:45 - Depart MB for the house fellowship. The last time I was there was before Andrew left for Mexico and seeing as he's back from an eight- or nine-week trip, let's just say it's been a while...
10:30 - Arrive at the House Fellowship. Drop David off & visit
11:30 - Depart for Burlington
1:00 - Dress Rehearsal for Mahler 4, Songs D'Auvergne, Orpheus & the Underworld
3:00 - Concert
5:00 - Race back to London and presumably eat dinner
6:30 - Dress Rehearsal for my recital on Monday
9:00 - L'Histoire du Soldat Rehearsal.
10:30 - Return car Symphony Hamilton is renting me to do all this (due by 11pm)

This is going to be a *ridiculous* day very much not adhering to the principle of simplicity. The more I do crazy days like this though, the more they become normal and the more at ease I am in stressful situations. Does it count if I take the attitude of simplicity even with a hectic schedule or is that just wishful thinking? Hmmm.

Probably needless to say, but I'm to bed early now. May peace be with you all.

I think I have about 1001 things to be doing right now, but can't pinpoint any of them so I am just going to go to bed. My apologies if I am supposed to be e-mail any of you right now... I shall try again in the morning.

In other news, I am growing a great fondness for Blackadder (sp?). Two w00t w00ts for British comedy.
